OpenAI stands at a crossroads. As it eyes an IPO, multiple state investigations cast a long shadow, raising industry anxiety. The scrutiny could shake investor confidence and reshape the AI landscape.
A coalition of state attorneys general subpoenaed OpenAI. New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office issued it, seeking data on advertising, data handling, and more. Florida sued OpenAI, alleging an unsafe product release. Also, a criminal probe in Florida links ChatGPT to a mass – shooting. In December, 42 attorneys general warned AI companies. California investigated xAI’s Grok chatbot.
The investigations come as OpenAI filed for an IPO. Legal scrutiny at this time can deter investors. If the issues aren’t resolved, OpenAI’s IPO may falter, and the AI industry may face stricter regulations.
